Tennis Elbow |
||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a tendinitis (inflammation of the tendon) of the extensor muscles of the forearm. The condition is when the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. It may be caused by a sudden injury or by repetitive use of the arm. The most common activities which affect this area are bending the wrist backwards (extension), turning the hand palm side up, and lifting an object with the elbow straight out.

Cause |

The pain is usually worse with strong gripping with the elbow in an extended position, as in a tennis back hand stroke, but this problem can occur in golf and other sports as well as with repetitive use of tools. People who are a high risk of tennis elbow are ones whose occupation requires strenuous or repetitive forearm movement, such as a mechanic or carpenter. People who participate in sports that require strenuous repetitive forearm movement, such as tennis and golf, are especially prone to this condition.
Tennis elbow is very similar to Golder's elbow. Golfer's elbow occurs on the inside aspect of the elbow where muscles attach to the bone. Golfer's elbow is generally caused by overuse or overload of the muscles along the inside of the forearm. |
